Xerox M950 Printer Review

A great multi-function device for the small office, the Xerox WorkCentre M950 does most things well. Multifunction printers are commonplace these days, but the early introduction into this market of this unit means that prices are very low to purchase this quality device today. What defines multifunction in this case means that the M950 is capable of printing, scanning, copying and faxing. Printing speed is rated at 12 pages per minute for monochrome and 7 pages per minute for color. The Xerox WorkCentre M950 ink is dispensed through four ink cartridges. Normally Xerox ink printers use solid ink, such as Xerox 8550 ink.

Maximum resolution is rated at 1200 x 1200 dpi. The Xerox M950 ink cartridges are capable of printing very clear and well-formed black text. The Xpress mode feature means that the Xerox M950 inkjet cartridges will complete a task at increased speed with little compromise in quality.

OS compatibility includes Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT 4.0. It should be no surprise that a unit made by Xerox features versatile copy controls including best, normal, express, and draft modes. Included software includes TextBridge PRO, MGI PhotoSuite and Quick Link III. The M950 offers several connection modes including USB, parallel, or an optional network port. Scanning is achieved using both flatbed and sheet-feed methods.

Photocopying is strength of the M950. No surprise here; this is a Xerox. One shortfall of the Xerox WorkCentre M950 printer is that photo printing on glossy photo paper is not up to par compared with a dedicated photo printer. The scanner will scan direct to email which is good in light of the fact that this inkjet unit relies on a separate fax modem.

A workhorse for the small office or home office user is the consensus of most reviewers. Realistically, the M950 is not designed for high output printing, but for moderate sized projects, limited color images and reasonable costs, this is a good choice.
