Xerox 6604 Printer Review
The Xerox 6604 is a monochrome, wide format scanning and printing solution with laser printing technology. It will be somewhat of a niche product, as it has a fairly high price tag, but only supports low volumes. It can output at up to 2.36 inches per second, and supports formats up to 36 inches wide. The machine uses large-capacity Xerox 6604 printer toner, which makes it affordable to operate.
The design of the 6604 is about as compact as can be for a model that supports large formats. It requires a space of around 60x28x61 inches, though it is pretty heavy, at almost 600 pounds even in the 1-roll configuration. It can be configured with support for 2 rolls for those who might need more than one media type. The ethernet port is the main means of connection, though a USB port is available for device interface only. An integrated FreeFlow Accxes print server helps manage workflow and performance.
The machine actually supports color scanning, despite its limitation of monochrome printing, so it is possible to scan large artwork or photos. The scanning resolution is limited to 600 dpi, however, so it will be best limited to more standard documents.
Unlike many large format printers that use ink, the use of toners can make the 6604 a much more cost-effective option. The single black Xerox 6604 toner cartridge is pretty affordable to replace, and has a fairly large capacity. With a yield of up to 14,300 pages for each Xerox 6604 toner cartridge, the cost per page is quite low.
Without the high-volume capabilities of larger machines, and limited to only monochrome output, the 6604 will only appeal to a select group of buyers. Still, its quick output and the addition of color scanning make it a solid choice, and its low-cost Xerox 6604 toner is inexpensive.
