The Xerox 6140 color laser printer has a 400 mhz processor and 256 MB of RAM in its standard configuration, which is more than enough power for a small office, and gives it the ability to handle graphics-intensive or large documents without any slowdowns. There are multiple configurations available. The 6140 is the base model, the 6140N adds ethernet networking support, and the 6140DN adds both networking and automatic duplexing, or two-sided printing. Although it costs a bit more, the duplexing option can save an office money by reducing paper usage when enabled as the default printing option. A number of paper capacity upgrades are available, allowing the machine to expand to accommodate more users.

Xerox 6140 toner cartridges have large page yields for its class, meaning a lower cost per page than many competing models. The black printer toner cartridge has a capacity of 2,600 pages, while each color laser toner cartridge has a capacity of 2,000 pages. Users can save more money by using third-party compatible cartridges instead of the more expensive branded Xerox Phaser 6140 toner cartridges.
