Xerox 5865 Printer Review
As a versatile multifunction monochrome laser printer, the Xerox WorkCentre 5865 will fit in comfortably in a large office with high workloads. As the slowest of three models in its line, it still offers impressive speeds of up to 65 pages per minute. Its list price may cause a bit of sticker shock, and Xerox 5865 printer toner supplies are expensive, even with their large capacities.
One of the main draws of the 5865 is that it includes the full gamut of print, scan, copy, and email features in its standard configuration, with walkup faxing as an option. Most offices may find they have no need for faxing given the machine's excellent scanning and the ability to send documents via email, saving on paper and WorkCentre 5865 toner at the same time. It also supports Apple's AirPrint protocol, for easy printing from iOS devices in the office.
The machine can handle paper sizes up to tabloid (11.7x17 inches) and has a very large automatic document feeder that not only holds up to 200 sheets, but it can handle two-sided originals in a single pass, shortening scanning time significantly. The standard paper supply is divided among a 100-sheet bypass tray, two 500-sheet trays, and a 3,600-sheet tandem tray. Optional upgrades can bring the device up to a whopping 8,700 sheets of input total.
The big problem with the 5865 is that it is not only pricey upfront, but replacement toners are very expensive as well. Each Xerox 5865 toner cartridge provides up to 55,000 to 65,000 pages, and usually come in packs of two. The high price of WorkCentre 5865 toner cartridges unfortunately leaves users with a very high cost per page, however, making other models in its class a better choice.
The feature set of the WorkCentre 5865 is well-implemented, and its upgrade options make it very versatile. It is hampered by expensive Xerox 5865 toner costs that make it costly to operate, however.
