As part of the MX-5500 series, the Sharp MX-5500N is a network-equipped multifunction color laser copier for a large office or a busy workgroup. It can output up to 55 pages per minute in monochrome and 41 pages per minute in color, and its expandable paper capacity provides a lot of room for growth. High capacities for Sharp MX-5500N printer toner are impressive, but prices could be a little more reasonable.

Setting up the MX-5500N for network printing is quite simple, as its ethernet interface and automatic setup routine will take care of the heavy lifting. It comes with an impressive paper capacity of 3,100 sheets, but can be expanded to a maximum of over 6,000 pages when larger output volumes are needed.

The MX-5500N comes with printing and copying included as standard features, but network scanning and faxing can be added as needed. With a 150-sheet automatic document feeder included as a built-in feature, the network scanning feature is almost a no brainer. The feeder can even handle duplex documents in a single pass, for fast scanning that will assist offices in switching to digital workflows. Best of all, this can conserve paper and Sharp MX-5500N toner supplies at the same time.

Unfortunately, conserving toners is advisable, since the four colors of Sharp MX-5500N toner cartridges can be expensive to replace. Each color Sharp MX-5500N toner cartridge has a yield of around 31,000 pages, while the black supply yields around 49,000 pages, but prices are quite high, making color printing particularly expensive.

There is a lot to like about the Sharp MX-5500N, from its fast output speeds to its numerous upgrade options. While its performance is impressive, it is hampered by high operating costs. This will make it only appealing to those with a fairly large budget.
