Sharp FO-4650 Printer Review
Dedicated laser fax machines aren't in as much demand as they used to be, but the Sharp FO-4650 is still worth a look for those who need one. Its transmission speeds are a bit slow, but its space-saving design takes up a small footprint and still manages to include a roomy control panel. The best feature, however, is the affordable price of Sharp FO-4650 printer toner.
The design of the FO-4650 is surprisingly small for a laser fax machine, measuring 10.6x18.1x15.2 inches and weighing a little less than 30 pounds, even with the Sharp FO-4650 toner installed. It has a paper capacity of 250 sheets, and the automatic document feeder can hold up to 50 sheets.
Instead of shrinking down the control panel and putting it on the front of the device, the manufacturer put it on top, which makes more room for a full-size keypad. The unit also includes a large array of speed dial buttons to help users save time. Of course, this does mean sacrificing a flatbed scanner, limiting the options of what items can be scanned.
The main downside of the device is its slow transmission speeds. It can send and receive at only 14.4 kbps, which is well below the Super G3 speeds that have become standard. It is worth noting that the machine can also handle basic copying.
Buyers who can look past the slow transmission speeds will be happy with the unit's affordable toners. Each Sharp FO-4650 toner cartridge has a capacity of 6,000 pages, which means a low cost per page. Third-party vendors also offer compatible Sharp FO-4650 toner cartridges for even lower prices, making it a very cost-effective way to send and receive faxes.
While the design of the FO-4650 is certainly impressive, it is severely hampered by its slow speeds. The copy function is too basic to be particularly useful as well, but low operating costs could still make it a good choice for the budget-conscious user.
