Sharp DM-3551 Printer Review
As part of a series of multifunction laser printers, the Sharp DM-3551 is the base model, also referred to as the DM-3551N, but this doesn't mean it isn't full-featured. In fact, it can print at a quick 35 pages per minute, and handles network printing and copying. While the DM-3551S model adds scanning and the DM-3551F add faxing, each is compatible with the same Sharp DM-3551 toner cartridges, keeping costs down.
Even in the most basic configuration, the DM-3551 starts with a large paper capacity of 2,000 sheets that is tailored to busy offices, with support for media up to 11x17 inches in size. Warm-up time is a little on the slow side, at 80 seconds, but is only a factor when the machine is first powered up for the day. With a first copy out time of 5.3 seconds, it is fast to respond to new tasks.
The DM-3551 has a bulky design, with a weight of 220 pounds that includes the Sharp DM-3551 printer toner supplies, the scanner, and the paper desk. It measures 43.4x32.5x26.2 inches, so it will require a fair amount of space. In addition to extra paper capacity, three finishing options are included: a stapler/finisher, a mailbox sorter, and a saddle-stitch finisher.
Replacing toners doesn't have to be costly or time-consuming. The Sharp DM-3551 toner cartridges each provide up to 27,000 pages, so the cost per page is low. Best of all, the Sharp DM-3551 toner is quick and easy to replace from the front access panel.
Offices that need faxing and network scanning may need to consider upgrading to the "S" and "F" models, but for basic copying and printing, it is hard to beat the DM-3551 for its affordable price and solid feature set. Add in the inexpensive supplies, and you have a great value for a multifunction printer.
