Sharp AR-164 Printer Review
The Sharp AR-164 is a great multifunction laser solution for the small office, especially one planning to expand in the future. It starts with only a copying function, but printing and faxing are available as upgrade options, and its speed of around 16 pages per minute is fairly solid for the price. Affordable Sharp AR-164 toner supplies will also keep an office under budget.
Of course, a small office machine needs to be compact and the AR-164 meets this requirement quite well. It measures 18 inches high, and has a footprint of just 18.5x23.5 inches. It weighs a little over 70 pounds, but this includes the Sharp AR-164 printer toner supply.
Somewhat surprisingly for such a compact device, users get both a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder, which can hold up to 30 sheets at a time. Paper handling is solid, with two 250-sheet trays to start, and upgrades are available for a maximum of 850 sheets.
The copy resolution is 600 dpi, but with the printing upgrade option, the unit can output at 1200 dpi for even better results. Since the printing option comes with only a parallel port for connection to a computer, buyers may want to consider the network option as well, for easier sharing.
Buyers tired of expensive replacement toners will find relief with the Sharp AR-164 toner cartridges. Each replacement Sharp AR-164 toner cartridge is rated for a yield of around 16,000 pages, and compatible supplies are available from third-party sellers.
Larger offices will find the AR-164 a bit limited, even with upgrades. For the smaller office, however, it has enough speed and capacity to improve workflow, and upgrades for future growth. Best of all, the inexpensive supplies will reduce operational costs from day one.
