Sharp AL-2040CS Printer Review
The Sharp AL-2040CS multifunction laser copier is an upgraded version of the AL-2030 model, adding scanning and networking to the mix, while also doubling the paper capacity. Print speeds are still around 16 pages per minute, and copies output at 20 pages per minute. Since the two models share a design for Sharp AL-2040CS printer toner, it keeps each more affordable.
The AL-2040 has a space-efficient design, but it is a little large for personal use, especially with its upgrades. The unit measures 17.5x20.4x17.5 inches and weighs 45 pounds. With an automatic document feeder that holds up to 50 sheets, users can scan through stacks of paper very efficiently, and there are two 250-sheet paper trays, compared to only one in the smaller model. For irregular media, there is also a flatbed scanner available, for sizes up to 8.5x14 inches.
Generally, the Sharp models are limited in that they can only print from Windows devices via USB. The addition of the ethernet port on the AL-2040CS makes it possible for Mac users to share the device as well. The 600 dpi resolution doesn't provide stellar output quality, but it is sharp enough for documents and most business printing needs.
Replacement toners are available in standard and high-capacity versions. The standard Sharp AL-2040CS toner cartridges have a yield of up to 4,000 pages. The high-capacity Sharp AL-2040CS toner cartridges are the much better option, as they provide up to 6,000 pages, which means a lower cost per page.
Even with its upgrades, the AL-2040CS should still be limited to small office use, as it can't handle larger volumes. For an office of a few users, however, great features like its ADF and extra paper capacity, as well as inexpensive Sharp AL-2040CS toner, make it an appealing choice for affordable printing and copying.
