Sharp AL-1651CS Printer Review
The theme of the Sharp AL-1651CS multifunction laser printer seems to be "more", as it includes more functions than one would expect, more speed, and yet is still very compact. It can copy and print at up to 16 pages per minute, uses affordable Sharp AL-1651CS toner supplies, and has solid output quality at up to 600 dpi resolution.
The one area where the machine might be a bit limited is its single paper tray of only 250 sheets. Busy personal users or a small office of a few users might go through this supply quickly and often. A bypass tray that holds 50 sheets is available, however, which adds some versatility.
The 30-sheet automatic document feeder is one of the best features of the AL-1651, and somewhat unexpected for such a small design. The device measures 15 inches tall, with a footprint of 19.8x20.4 inches, perfect for desktop use, and its weight is only 44.1 pounds. Connecting it to a PC for printing and scanning is easy, with USB and parallel ports available, but only Windows operating systems are supported, with no Mac or Linux support available. An ethernet port is available for network, however.
When replacement toners are needed, users must juggle multiple different panels and trays, but high-capacity Sharp AL-1651CS toner cartridges can keep this from being a common occurrence. The Sharp AL-1651CS toner cartridges share their design with other models, providing up to 6,000 pages, which keeps the cost per page very low.
With support for networking, inexpensive Sharp AL-1651CS toner, and nice extras like a 30-sheet ADF, this machine is extremely capable. Its low price and small frame might make some buyers wary, but it is an excellent value that is very well-equipped for small office use.
