Sharp AL-1251 Printer Review
The Sharp AL-1251 is a multifunction laser copier and printer with a compact form factor and a low price that will appeal to small office and even home users. Its copy speed is only 12 pages per minute, and print speeds are 8 pages per minute, but high-quality output and extremely affordable Sharp AL-1251 printer toner may be worth the tradeoffs.
The unit has a weight of only 56.4 pounds that includes the Sharp AL-1251 toner supply and it measures just 18.3x20.5x18.9 inches. Of course, the limited space means other limitations, as it includes only two 250-sheet paper trays for input. It also includes only a flatbed scanner, with no automatic document feeder, though one can be added as an optional upgrade.
Unlike other models in its series, printing is included as a standard feature, rather than requiring an upgrade. The main limitation of its printing capabilities is that it includes only a parallel port, rather than a newer USB port. This could be remedied with an adapter, but the more useful option would be to upgrade the model with ethernet capabilities, so it can be shared across a network.
If this is starting to sound like a lot of upgrades, keep in mind the low cost of toners could make it all worthwhile. Replacement Sharp AL-1251 toner cartridges are some of the least expensive in its class. Even better, each Sharp AL-1251 toner cartridge has a yield of up to 6,000 pages, so it can go a long time before a replacement is needed.
The AL-1251 lacks the modern connection options and speed that newer models can offer, but its affordable price and low operating expenses are appealing. With a few upgrades, it could be an ideal machine for low-volume office work.
