Samsung SCX-4116 Printer Review
The Samsung SCX-4116 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office. Print quality is excellent, multifunction features are great, and the TonerSave mode can be a real money saver.
The multifunction capabilities of the SCX-4116 include printing, scanning, and copying. Faxing functionality is not included, but small office users may not need it anyway. Scanning and copying can be done either with the unit's flatbed scanning surface, or with the automatic document feeder, which can copy or scan multiple pages automatically. The document feeder is particularly useful for scanning large amounts of documents for digitizing and archiving, as it makes the task much quicker and easier. Although the printer supports Macs, it should be noted that Macs are supported for printing only, and not for scanning. It is nice to see more Mac support in office products, but only supporting half of the unit's functionality will be frustrating for Mac users.
The SCX-4116 can also save some serious money, as it includes a TonerSave mode. This mode uses less toner ink for each print or copy, with only a minimal reduction in quality. In some cases, the amount of toner saved can be up to 40%, representing a significant savings in cost of ownership over the lifetime of the printer.
Print quality is excellent, utilizing the 600 dpi printing resolution. Copies also scan and print at 600 dpi for clear and sharp copies. Print and copy speed is also quite fast at 17 pages per minute. This is somewhat slower than dedicated laser printers, but this is typical for a multifunction device, and most users will find its speed more than adequate for their needs.
Overall, the Samsung SCX-4116 combines solid features and great print quality with the cost savings of its TonerSave mode to make a very appealing package. Small office users will find a lot to like in this unit, as long as they don't need the ability to fax.
