Samsung ML-1740 Printer Review
The Samsung ML-1740 is a monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It has solid paper capacity and fast printing speeds in a very compact design. A smaller starter cartridge is a disappointment. Consider the Samsung CLP-660 toner printer if you need color.
Home and small office users looking for a monochrome laser printer often need one that is compact, as space is often limited. The ML-1740 fits the bill quite nicely on this front, as it sports a very small footprint and weighs only 21 pounds. It also has good paper capacity for its class, at 250 pages. The lack of a separate multipurpose tray is a little disappointing, but forgivable considering its price and compact size. There is a single-sheet bypass tray for alternate media types and sizes, however.
The ML-1740 has a 66 MHz processor and 8 MB of memory, allowing it to do most of its own processing, except for very large documents. It connects via USB, and setting it up is a simple matter of running the software installation program and connecting the printer when prompted. A Toner Save mode is included for saving on toner costs.
Samsung ML-1740 toner is fairly inexpensive, resulting in a low cost of ownership, especially when using the Toner Save mode. Each Samsung ML-1740 toner cartridge has a capacity of 3,000 pages, though the starter cartridge included with the printer has a capacity of only 1,000 pages.
Print speed is quite good, at around 17 pages per minute. Text quality is top notch, with dark and sharp characters even at small font sizes. Graphic quality is a little below average, but probably good enough for the majority of users, who print mainly text.
Overall, the Samsung ML-1740 is a very compact and affordable printer that provides excellent print quality at fast speeds. Expect to replace the starter cartridge early, but cost of ownership will be low afterwards.
