The Samsung CLX-3170 is a color laser multi-functioning machine. Able to scan, print and copy, this little machine can meet multiple needs without costing too much money. Its size is quite compact at only 16.3x14.2x12.2 inches, making it an easy fit in any office. Though networking does not come standard, it can be added as an upgradable feature at any time. Memory, however, cannot be upgraded from the built-in 128 MB.

Four Samsung CLX-3170 toner cartridges are needed, and these are filled with cyan, magenta, yellow or black printer toner. Each of the color toners will last for 1,000 pages before expiring, and the black will last for about 1,500 pages before replacements will be needed. The cost per page using the Samsung CLX-3170 toner is much more affordable than many competing models on the market.

Using the Samsung CLX-3170 toner cartridges, resolutions can get as high as 2400x600 dpi, which will leave documents looking professional and sharp. It's rather slow, however, which could be a major downside for small offices. When printing in black-and-white, up to 16 pages per minute are possible. If printing in color, it's even slower at only 4 pages per minute. Though for offices these speeds may cause buyers to look elsewhere, for homes, these speeds will most likely do just fine.

Toner from the manufacturer can be overpriced, but like for most current printers on the market, remanufactured Samsung CLX-3170 toner is available from third party vendors. Though these toners will cost a lot less, they will still last just as long and produce the same high resolutions.

Overall, the Samsung CLX-3170 is a solid laser printer that will add three functions to homes or offices for a very affordable price. It isn't anything flashy, though, but if more features are needed, upgrades are available to appease growing companies.
