Available in several models, the Ricoh Aficio SP C222 series of multifunction color laser printers can handle a lot of tasks, but the limited output speed of only 20 pages per minute puts them firmly in the realm of the small office. Output quality is sharp, but its high price tag and expensive Ricoh SP C222 printer toner supplies aren't very conducive to small budgets.

The SP C222DN model includes duplexing and networking features, while the SP C222SF is a multifunction unit with printing, copying, scanning, and faxing capabilities. The latter may be a bit difficult to squeeze into some small office spaces, as it measures 18.7x16.5x19.4 inches. It also weighs a hefty 66.1 pounds, although this does at least include the Aficio SP C222 toner supplies, so it won't get heavier with the four toners installed.

Reviewers noted that the output quality is quite good across the board. Standard text fared the best, while graphics and photos were a little less impressive. As a result, the unit is a better fit for users who do mainly standard documents, with occasional color printing needs.

The device starts with a paper capacity of 250 sheets, but a second 500-sheet tray can be added to expand its capabilities. A 35-sheet automatic document feeder is included with the multifunction model, which can significantly speed up scanning and copying operations.

With four separate Ricoh SP C222 toner cartridges to replace, small office users might be a bit overwhelmed by the cost and maintenance tasks of keeping the unit running. Even with sizable yields of up to 2,000 pages for each Aficio SP C222 toner cartridge, the cost per page is higher than many competing models.

The SP C222 would seem to hold the most appeal for a small office with only a few shared users, especially given its limited paper capacity and speed. With high costs for Ricoh SP C222 toner, however, buyers might do better to find a more cost-effective model.
