Ricoh AC204 Printer Review
The Ricoh Aficio AC204 has a solid feature set, as a multifunction laser printer that can print, copy, scan, and fax. Its purchase price is quite high, however, and it is showing its age compared to newer and faster models. It can print around 16 pages per minute, and has quick copy speeds as well. The AC204 is fairly compact, with a height of only 18.1 inches and a footprint of 22x17 inches. It is a little heavier than might be expected, at 49.4 pounds with the Aficio AC204 toner supply installed. This size does probably preclude it from sharing a desk with a computer, and the only connection choices are parallel and USB, as it lacks any networking option.
A 30-sheet automatic document feeder is a nice touch for faster scanning, copying, and faxing of multi-page documents. The input paper capacity is 550 sheets, with a 100-sheet bypass tray. This would be a good fit for busy personal users, but might be a little too limiting for small offices. Reviewers noted that text quality was very sharp, but graphics and photos were just fair, with some banding and dithering present in the final results.
One aspect that is quite impressive about the unit is its affordable replacement toners. Ricoh AC204 toner cartridges are some of the more affordable in its class, especially when using third-party alternatives. Each Aficio AC204 toner cartridge also lasts for around 6,000 pages, so users won't have to replace them too frequently.
The AC204 isn't overly impressive by modern standards, as it lags behind the current competition in speed, and also comes at a premium price. Buyers who could pick one up for less, however, might be able to save some money in the long run by virtue of its inexpensive Ricoh AC204 toner supplies.
