Okidata C831 Printer Review

The Okidata C831 is a compact color laser printer that conserves space without sacrificing too much in the way of speed and output quality. It can print up to 35 pages per minute, and supports larger media like tabloid sizes. Its main drawback is the high cost of Oki C831 printer toner supplies, but its customization options may win some buyers over.

The C831 comes in two different models. The C831n is the base model with wired networking via ethernet. The C831dn also adds automatic duplexing for two-sided prints. The control panel includes a fairly basic display that won't preview images, but its menu system is easy to navigate.

The basic configuration includes a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 300-sheet main tray, but options are available to upgrade its capacity. Users can add up to two additional trays that hold 530 sheets each, for a grand total of 1,460 sheets. This could be very useful for a growing office that is not yet sure how much capacity might be needed in the future.

Reviews of the C831 are quite positive, highlighting its tabloid-size media support and solid speeds. Reviewers disliked its photo output quality and lack of a front-mounted USB port, however.

Buying four replacement toners is expensive in any case, but Okidata C831 toner cartridges are particularly pricey compared to others in its class. Each of the four Oki C831 toner cartridges is rated for a yield of 10,000 pages, but the cost per page still tends to be high.

The C831 seems to be targeted at small office users, but its high price tag and expensive Okidata C831 toner supplies may be too much for the small office budget to handle. As a result, it will likely only appeal to those with larger budgets who are interested in its upgrade potential.
