Home users have different needs in a printer than those in the office, and the Lexmark Z43 inkjet is designed to fit these needs. Its compact size is perfect for small spaces, and its low price is perfect for small budgets. Unfortunately, the high cost of Lexmark Z43 ink makes it less appealing in the long run. Print speeds are adequate, at up to 12 pages per minute for black and 6 pages per minute for color, but potential buyers should note that printing at higher settings will be quite a bit slower.

The unit connects via USB or parallel, though neither cable is included in the box. It includes Accu-Feed paper handling technology, which Lexmark claims will virtually eliminate paper jams, though some user reviews do mention problems with jams. The Lexmark Z43 ink cartridges included in the box are a single black and a single color printer ink. The Lexmark Z43 ink cartridges are easy to access and replace but expensive.

For a budget printer, it supports a wide array of media types, such as transparencies, plain paper, index cards, labels, envelopes and greeting cards. It even supports paper weights up to 150 lbs. Input paper capacity is 100 sheets, which is consistent with most models in its class. Both Windows and Mac platforms are supported, which will be good news for Mac users.

PC Magazine's review of the Lexmark Z43 inkjet unit is generally negative. Their main complaint was the cost of Lexmark Z43 ink. The magazine pointed out that although its upfront price is low, it will become very expensive over the course of one or two years, especially compared to the lower printer ink costs of competing models. They also found its print speeds to be rather slow.
