The Lexmark X543 color laser printer, also referred to as the X543DN, is a multifunction device, capable of printing, scanning, and copying. It includes built-in ethernet network support, allowing it to connect directly to an office network for simple sharing. The unit works quite well as a standalone copy machine, and its scanning feature supports sending scans to a variety of locations, including network folders and connected PCs.

The unit also has automatic duplexing, or two-sided printing, built in. This opens up many printing options for users, and is also a way to reduce paper usage, especially when the duplex feature is enabled by default.

Paper capacity is 250 sheets, which may be a bit small for some networked offices. Paper capacity upgrades are available, including a 650-sheet upgrade that incorporates a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. This is especially useful for offices that frequently require multiple types or sizes of paper, as it avoids having to empty and reload a single drawer.

Lexmark X543 toner cartridges have a capacity of 1,100 pages for each color laser toner cartridge, and 1,100 pages for the black laser toner cartridge. Toner prices are fairly inexpensive, but users will save even more money by enabling the printer's toner save mode by default, reducing the amount of toner used per page. Empty toner cartridges are easily removed and replaced.

Print speed is impressive, at 21 pages per minute for both black and color prints. Text and graphics are very sharp, and photo and color quality is vivid, with accurate colors and very few defects.
