The Lexmark X340n is a monochrome laser printer with multifunction capabilities. It is priced well for small offices and home users, but may fit in well with a larger office with low-volume printing needs as well. The printer is also available as the X342n model, which is identical except for the inclusion of a high-capacity toner cartridge (6,000 pages compared to 2,500).

Its multifunction features include print, fax, copy, and scan functions. The control panel allows access to all major features directly, eliminating the need for a PC for most functions. Many multifunction units, especially those designed for home use, require a PC to do most of functionality, so this is not a feature to overlook.

The printer features an automatic document feeder on top, which can hold up to 50 pages. This is a welcome feature for users with the need to scan or copy stacks of documents at a time. The included ethernet port means you can connect directly to a network for printer sharing, with a minimum amount of setup time needed. A toner cartridge is also easily installed.

Print quality is good, but shows some blurriness and other problems at small font sizes. Print speed is good, around 17 pages per minute, and copy speed is also reasonable, at 13 pages per minute. While the X340n won't win any awards for speed, the amount of functionality you get for the price is the main draw, not its speed. For the target audience of small office and home users, these speeds will probably be more than adequate.

Overall, the Lexmark X340n is a solid multifunction laser printer that will fill the needs of small office and home users on a budget quite well. Add the color Lexmark C534 toner printer to the X340 and you have all the functions a small office will need. While print speed and print quality are not up to the standards of more expensive models, the sheer number of features included for the price will likely make up for them in the long run.
