The Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro4000 was clearly designed to handle the versatile needs of busy offices, but for half the price of a laser printer, which is more likely to be chosen as office equipment. With a compact frame that can fit on any small table by the wall, cluttered desk in a cubicle and even a bookshelf in the den, it is hard to believe that the Pro4000 actually has the ability to act as the primary printer, high-grade copier, busy fax machine and flatbed scanner.

The 256 MB of memory can hold a large amount of data and the 660 MHz process can transmit the data quickly, which means up to 40 pages per minute for black-and-white documents and 36 pages per minute in full color. Using only black Lexmark Pro4000 ink, the standard text documents will have a crisp resolution of 2400x1800 dpi. When the other three colors of printer ink get involved, though, the maximum resolution attainable is 4800x3600 dpi.

Thermal inkjet technology is implemented to ensure the utmost precision and true-to-life results, which is aided by high-end Lexmark Pro4000 ink. There are a total of four OfficeEdge Pro4000 ink cartridges that are required for operation, each holding a single color. Considering this is an inkjet printer, the page yield of the printer ink is surprising. The cyan, magenta and yellow Lexmark Pro4000 ink can produce up to 1,600 prints while the black can yield as many as 2,500 pages.

Networking, duplexing and expandable paper capacity are all features that will benefit the office. Users can connect via USB, ethernet or wireless, and the color LCD on the top panel simplifies navigation. PictBridge and memory card slots are also available for photo printing, and the quality of the OfficeEdge Pro4000 ink can make pictures that could rival a dark room.
