The magicolor 2490MF includes the standard all-in-one features of print, scan, copy, and fax functions, along with a few extra features not always common in multifunction devices. Copy and fax functions can be used standalone, without the need for a PC connection. Scanning to email is supported, allowing users to scan from the device and email the scans to any email address directly, when connected by ethernet. The printer also includes a PictBridge port for printing photos directly from a digital camera.

The scanner is quite capable, and able to scan at resolutions up to 600 dpi and color depths up to 24-bit. The printer includes PaperPort software for document management, and also includes OCR (optical character recognition) software for converting scanned text into editable and searchable text documents. Scanning can be done either with the flatbed scanning surface or the automatic document feeder, allowing users to automatically scan up to 50 pages at a time. Combined with the OCR software, the 2490MF is a great way to archive large amounts of paper documents into a searchable digital format, allowing an office to get rid of old paper document archives.

Print speed is around 20 pages per minute in black and 5 pages per minute in color. At these speeds, the 2490MF won't win any awards for speed, but its print quality may make up for it.
