The Konica-Minolta PageWorks 18L is one of the most basic models of its series, which makes it best suited as a personal laser printer. Its print speeds of 18 pages per minute aren't overly impressive, but its output quality is quite sharp, especially for text, and the cost per page of Konica-Minolta 18L printer toner is very low. Lack of connection options could be an issue for some buyers.
The 18L sits right in the middle of its model line, which means it has a few extra features compared to the 18 and 18+, such as Mac compatibility, but doesn't have some of the networking and duplexing features of the 18LN and 18N models. Duplexing can be added as an optional upgrade, but the lack of a network port might make some buyers consider the upgraded models, as the 18L only features a parallel port.
The unit is generally compact, but certainly larger than most inkjet models for personal use. It measures 13.1x17.2x20.1 inches and weighs 28.7 pounds. The paper tray sticks out from the front, which increases its footprint a bit, and the PageWorks 18L toner cartridge is loaded from the top, so it requires enough clearance to open the top access panel regularly.
Users don't get a choice of multiple capacities when it comes to toners, but the standard Konica-Minolta 18L toner cartridge provides up to 9,000 pages before expiring. The purchase price for OEM PageWorks 18L toner is a little high, but the large capacity balances it out to a fairly low cost per page. Unfortunately, compatible Konica-Minolta 18L toner is not easy to find.
The PageWorks 18L provides solid speeds and good output quality, and it should work quite well for an individual. Lack of a USB port or ethernet port might cause some buyers to choose the upgraded models in its line, however.
