Kodak 1000 Printer Review

The Kodak PM 1000 is a solid inkjet printer that can handle basic photos and documents, but not much else. Its print speeds are a bit on the slow side, and limited connectivity could be a real problem for many buyers. Its main selling point is in low-cost Kodak 1000 printer ink supplies, which can keep operating expenses down.

The 1000 is fairly compact in size, which is good news for home users. It measures 7.2x16.2x8.4 inches, and weighs just 6.6 pounds, even with the PM 1000 printer ink installed. On the back of the machine, the only connection option is a parallel port, which is bad news for most modern computers. Users will likely need a USB adapter to even connect the device, which means more added cost.

The inclusion of memory card slots on the front of the device seems like a nice bonus, but only CompactFlash and SmartMedia formats are supported. Without a color LCD for previewing, the process is a little convoluted as well. Users can print a contact sheet to identify the photos they want to print, but this takes even more time and uses Kodak 1000 ink, so it is far from a perfect solution.

The machine can hold only one Kodak 1000 ink cartridge at a time, so users will need to switch from tricolor to black for photos and text, respectively. The availability of compatible PM 1000 ink cartridges helps to keep operating costs down, but all of the necessary switching might be more than most buyers are willing to put up with.

For the right price, the PM 1000 inkjet printer could be an affordable solution for low-volume printing in a home. With so many inexpensive models on the market with better speeds and sharper output, however, it probably won't be worth switching supplies and buying an adapter for this model.
