Don't let the USB port on the back fool you. The HP PSC 2358 is actually a very self-contained all-in-one inkjet printer. It can handle printing and copying without the need of a computer, with scanning functionality that includes OCR. Despite expensive HP PSC 2358 printer ink, its purchase price is very affordable, and print speeds of up to 18 pages per minute in color and 23 pages per minute in black are pretty impressive for the price.

Paper handling is one area where the PSC 2358 shows its limitations. The input and output tray are both forward-facing, which frequently means curled pages. The input tray can hold 100 sheets, and supports sizes up to 8.5x11.7 inches, while the output tray holds only 50 sheets. For those who want to convert from paper to digital, however, OCR software is included to be used with the scanning function, resulting in editable text files.

The PSC 2358 also comes with a PictBridge USB port on the front and several memory card slots. This allows for simple editing and printing in standalone mode. When connected to a computer, however, the Image Zone software does an excellent job of managing, editing, and preparing photos for printing, even though reviewers note that it is quite a memory hog.

Even with all of its benefits, the high cost of HP PSC 2358 printer ink cartridges is a major concern. With fairly low capacities, users will find themselves replacing the HP PSC 2358 ink cartridges fairly often, and at great expense, and should probably consider remanufactured supplies to cut costs.

With more functionality than expected in its standalone mode, the PSC 2358 could conceivably be used for basic copying and photo printing without every connecting to a PC, but the included software opens up even more possibilities. Buyers who can work around the high cost of HP PSC 2358 ink will find it to be a good value for a simple all-in-one inkjet printer.
