The minimalistic design of the HP OfficeJet PSC 1217 all-in-one inkjet allows it to achieve a low purchase price and still offer solid performance, at speeds of up to 12 pages per minute in black and 10 pages per minute in color. It's scanning and copying are pretty basic, and HP PSC 1217 printer ink is very expensive, but home users with low-volume needs may not mind.

The input paper tray extends out from the front of the device, which means media must make a U-bend through the paper path. It does hold up to 100 sheets of plain paper, however, and the benefit of this design is that the tray can be folded up out of the way when not in use. Even with the paper tray out, the depth is only 10.2 inches, and with a height of only 6.68 inches, it doesn't take up much vertical space. The unit is 16.76 inches wide, and has a weight of just 10.9 pounds.

Home users generally don't need a very detailed control panel, but the PSC 1217 is so limited in this regard users will need to utilize the software for most functions. Copying is limited to 9 copies from a single original when using the control panel, for example, but up to 50 when using the software. The scanner has an enhanced resolution of up to 19,200 dpi, however, which is excellent for scanning detailed color photos.

The black HP PSC 1217 ink cartridge can provide up to 520 pages, which is quite impressive for an inkjet model, while the tricolor supply can provide up to 400 pages. Even with the extra capacity, HP PSC 1217 ink cartridges are some of the most expensive in its class, so users may want to consider remanufactured HP PSC 1217 printer ink as a cost-cutting alternative.

When a compact size is more important than functionality and affordability, the HP PSC 1217 could be a good fit. Buyers who want robust scanning and copying should probably look elsewhere, however.
