Buyers won't find a lot of surprises with the HP PSC 1213, but this all-in-one inkjet printer does an adequate job of printing, copying, and scanning, and all at a very affordable price. Print speeds of 12 pages per minute in black and 10 pages per minute in color aren't overly impressive, but it is suitable for home users with low-volume needs.

The PSC 1213 sports a very simple design, and its control panel is very sparse, so users will need to rely on the manual a little more than they might with a more intuitive model. The device itself measures 6.7x16.8x10.2 inches, with a weight of only 11 pounds that includes the HP PSC 1213 ink cartridges.

No networking support is included, but this is hardly surprising for the price. Instead, it includes a single USB port, and the device can support Windows and Mac operating systems. Helpful software is included in the package, such as HP Photo and Imaging software for organizing and editing photos, and ReadIris Pro for using OCR to convert paper documents into digital text.

The input paper capacity of 100 sheets is fairly standard for its class. Supported media types include photo paper, labels, transparencies, and more, and the maximum media size is 8.5x14 inches.

The convenience of having only a tricolor and black HP PSC 1213 ink cartridge to replace is always offset by replacing the tricolor printer ink before all three colors are dry. Replacement costs for OEM supplies are a bit on the expensive side, but remanufactured HP 1213 printer ink is available from third-party sellers for around half the price, making it much more affordable to operate.

For a compact, affordable solution to printing, scanning, and copying, the HP PSC 1213 inkjet is quite impressive. While it isn't the fastest or most intuitive on the market, it will handle basic tasks quite well, and won't take up a lot of space in the home.
