HP 5524 Printer Review

The HP Photosmart 5524 is an all-in-one inkjet printer that combines some of the company's best new features, like mobile printing and a touchscreen display, to make it a good value for the price. It also has a compact design suited for home users, solid output speeds, and options for HP 5524 printer ink that make it affordable to operate.

Users with limited space will love that the 5524 measures only 5.6 inches tall with a footprint of 17.5x12.8 inches. Extended paper trays add a bit more to its size, but it also weighs just 11.12 pounds, even with Photosmart 5524 ink supplies installed. A USB port is included, though users will likely gravitate toward its Wi-Fi support instead. Unfortunately, there is no ethernet port included for sharing on a wired network.

Mobile printing is a hot feature right now, and HP not only supports the popular AirPrint feature, but also its own ePrint feature. These not only allows for easy wireless printing and scanning with downloadable apps, but users can also send a document or photo to an email address and print it remotely.

For such a compact device, it is perhaps not surprising that paper handling is a bit limited. Still, its 80-sheet input paper tray and 15-sheet output tray should be enough for most home users.

The printer ink system consists of five separate HP 5524 ink cartridges, including a "photo black" supply that gives photos deeper blacks. The standard Photosmart 5524 ink cartridges are a little small in capacity, but high-capacity versions are available with around double the page yield. Users should also consider remanufactured HP 5524 ink as an alternative to high OEM prices.

If buyers don't mind its small paper capacity and lack of an ethernet port and document feeder, the 5524 is a pretty good inkjet model for the average home user. Mobile printing features are a wonderful addition, and quick print speeds make it a good value for such an affordable price.
