Many all-in-one inkjet printers promise to help users organize their paper documents, but few offer the complete set of tools. The HP OfficeJet 8045 e-All-in-One delivers by integrating the Neat software organization system to wrangle digital documents in a way that actually makes sense. It includes an external drive for backup, and uses inexpensive HP 8045 printer ink supplies to keep operating costs low.

The 8045 supports wireless networking, so it is easy to set up and share. It includes NFC technology so that mobile device users can simply tap them to the unit to begin printing a document or photo. A separate photo tray is on-hand for quick 4x6 or 5x7 prints without the need to empty or load media.

The Neat organization system takes incoming scanned documents and applies OCR to turn them into editable, searchable digital documents. This is much more efficient then sorting on the fly, and less time consuming. Saving digital documents is easy, as the unit includes an external 1 TB hard drive that can then be plugged into a computer for file access. Users can also send scanned documents via email, which is an easy alternative to faxing that also saves on paper and OfficeJet 8045 printer ink supplies.

The inkjet system uses two HP 8045 ink cartridges. One is a combined tricolor supply containing cyan, magenta, and yellow, while the other contains black. The OfficeJet 8045 ink cartridges come in standard and high-capacity sizes, with the latter costing a bit more upfront but offering a lower cost per page. Bargain hunters may want to consider using remanufactured HP 8045 ink, which is generally less expensive than OEM versions.

While its marquee features are focused on scanning paper documents, the HP 8045 is quite well rounded overall. Its printing, faxing, and copying features are just as robust as scanning, and the inclusion of an external hard drive is a nice bonus.
