HP M401dn Printer Review

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn is part of a series of monochrome laser printers that includes the M401 base model, the international M401a version, the M401d with duplexing, and the M401dw that adds wireless support. The M401dn model itself includes both duplexing and wired ethernet for network sharing. It can provide print speeds of up to 35 pages per minute and high-capacity versions of HP M401dn printer toner can make it a very affordable solution.

The M401dn will fit best in a small, shared office environment, and it has the build for it, measuring just 10.7x14.4x14.5 inches, and weighing 24.2 without the LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn toner installed. Automatic duplexing can conserve paper by printing on both sides of the page, and its initial paper capacity of 300 sheets can be expanded to a maximum of 800 sheets by adding an optional second tray.

Mobile printing has become increasingly important, even in an office environment, so the M401dn includes support for the HP ePrint standard as well as Apple's AirPrint. The ePrint option lets users print from the cloud by sending an email to the printer with a document attached. The AirPrint solution applies only to Apple devices, but makes for easy integration.

Toners are available in standard and high-capacity sizes. The standard black HP M401dn toner cartridge provides up to 2,700 pages, while the high-capacity HP M401dn toner cartridges can provide up to 6,900 pages each, for a much lower cost per page. Compatible HP M401dn toner is commonly available for a fraction of the cost of OEM versions, and makes for the most economical choice.

With fast speeds, great networking features, and the ability to print from virtually anywhere, the HP M401dn can become the central hub of a busy small office. Expandability options for paper handling leave room for growth in the future as well.
