Though it offers only low-volume capabilities that may be better used in a home environment, the design of the HP LaserJet Pro M1139 makes it look more like an office device. The frame is square and black with a flat top panel that opens to reveal the face of the scanner. The display is small, only big enough to show status updates and warning for low printer ink. The M1139 does not have an automatic document feeder that many current multifunction models on the market.

This unit can scan documents in color, but copying and printing are limited to black-and-white as only black HP M1139 toner is used. The copier offers the ability to resize images before duplicating, but does lack in clarity and may be a bit grainy depending on the complexity of the task. The flatbed surface of the scanner allows users to scan pages from books or magazines and can generate an internal resolution of 1200 dpi. This means that documents scanned and saved to file will be true to the original.

Upon initial purchase, the manufacturer supplies a starter HP M1139 toner cartridge in the shipping box. Once it runs out, users will need to purchase replacement toners, which are most easily found online. Each LaserJet Pro M1139 toner cartridge has the capacity to yield up to 1,600 pages. Though brand-name replacement printer toner is not overly expensive, compatible HP M1139 toner is also available that will cost much less.

Connected to a computer by a USB 2.0 port and compatible with all major operating systems, this monochrome laser printer will fit into any environment. Up to 150 sheets can be held in the input tray while only about 100 sheets can fit on the output tray. The affordability provided by the low-cost of LaserJet Pro M1139 toner and multiple functions give this unit great value.
