The HP LaserJet M1005 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. Good speeds and great quality make it an excellent choice for many users, but office users might miss having an automatic document feeder.
The HP M1005 can print, scan, and copy, and does all of these functions quite well. It is not as fully-featured as some of HP's all-in-one machines, as it lacks faxing capabilities, and has no automatic document feeder for automatic scans and copies. The M1005 is really made for the home or small office user who needs to do very occasional copying and scanning, but wants the quality and speed of a laser printer, and for this user, it is very well-suited.
The design of the HP M1005 is relatively compact, but it does seem a bit bulkier than it needs to be, as many of HP's other models tend to be a little smaller. Its paper and duty capacities are definite clues to its small-volume design. Input paper capacity is only 150 sheets in its main tray, with a 10-sheet multipurpose tray for other sizes or types of media. Maximum monthly duty cycle is only 5,000 pages, and the recommended monthly page volume is 2,000 pages or less. In other words, high-volume users should certainly look elsewhere. For the price and the functionality, however, small-volume users will find a lot to like with the M1005, and will probably not run up against its limitations.
HP LaserJet M1005 toner capacity is moderately small, much like HP M2727 toner. At 2,000 pages per standard HP M1005 toner and 3,000 pages per high yield HP M1005 toner, the HP LaserJet M1005 toner cartridge will be satisfactory for a small needs user.
Print speed is quite good at 14 pages per minute, especially for the price. Print quality is also excellent, utilizing the printer's 600 dpi resolution to produce sharp, detailed text and even decent graphics. Scanning quality, despite the lack of a convenient automatic document feeder, is very good, and the unit can scan in color as well as a monochrome, like HP 1020 toner.
Overall, the HP LaserJet M1005 is a fine choice for low-volume use, and offers good quality, speed and high-grade laser toner for a reasonable price. Higher-volume users will need to look elsewhere to accommodate their needs.
