HP M176 Printer Review

The HP LaserJet Pro M176 multifunction color laser printer may have "Pro" in its title, but it is actually aimed at the home office user who needs professional features and functions. Its print speed tops out at only 14 pages per minute in color and 17 pages per minute for monochrome, but its web-connected features and colorful touchscreen display are very impressive. Replacing LaserJet Pro M176 printer toner supplies might be more expensive than home users would like, however.

The M176 can print, fax, copy, and scan, and all for a very affordable price. Its color printing capabilities make it a significant upgrade from the similar M125 series, which is monochrome-only. All of this is in spite of a fairly compact frame that measures just 11x16.7x11.4 inches, with a weight of only 32.6 pounds that includes the HP M176 toner supplies.

The unit includes a standard USB port as well as an ethernet port for networking, but does not include support for Wi-Fi. It supports Apple AirPrint for easy mobile printing from iOS devices, and integrates with a number of web services for file sharing. As users scan digital documents into the machine, they can save them to a number of services such as Google Docs. Box.com, Dropbox, and more. This provides an easy way to store documents to the cloud with only a few taps on the large touchscreen interface.

With the addition of color printing there is now the need to replace four toners instead of just one. The somewhat high price of HP M176 toner cartridges doesn't help in this regard, especially for home users on a tight budget. Page yields are decent, with the black supply rated for 1,300 pages and each color LaserJet Pro M176 toner cartridge rated for 1,000 pages. Still, the overall cost of HP M176 toner might be a bit too much for some buyers.

The M176 includes so many great features it is difficult to believe its low purchase price. While its slow speeds and expensive supplies are cause for concern, it could still be an excellent choice for home and small office users.
