HP MFP M476 Printer Review

Available in multiple configurations, the HP LaserJet Pro M476 multifunction color laser printer can satisfy a variety of different needs. Each variation provides the same output speed of 21 pages per minute, which might be a little slow for the busiest office environments. It also suffers from expensive HP M476 printer toner supplies that might prove to be too much for a small office on a budget.

Often referred to as the MFP M476 for its multifunction capabilities, the unit can handle printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. Variations include the M476dn with duplexing and networking, the M476nw which adds wireless support, and the M476dw with all of the above. This lets buyers choose the features that are most important for their needs, without paying too much for unnecessary extras.

The printer can output a maximum resolution of 600 dpi, which provides sharp quality, but doesn't match that of more expensive 1200-dpi machines. It includes extras that are often more targeted at home users, however, such as Apple's AirPrint and HP ePrint for integration with mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. The intuitive 3.5-inch touchscreen control panel provides access to web services so that users can print from the cloud with ease.

Replacing all four toners is the largest expense, and each HP M476 toner cartridge is fairly pricey. The three color LaserJet Pro M476 toner cartridges are rated for around 2,400 pages each, while the black supply is also offered in a 4,400-page capacity version. This means monochrome printing can be cost-effective, but frequent use of the color LaserJet Pro M476 toner will take a major hit on the budget.

The combination of four functions in one machine is space-saving, but the M476's speed and output quality are a bit lacking. Add to that the high cost of HP M476 toner supplies, and it doesn't have the long term value of other models in its class.
