The HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One lives up to its billing of being a good multifunction device. It uses inkjet printing technology. Its low cost, compact size, ability to handle a light workload, and print/copy/fax/scan features make it a good buy for those that manage a home-office. The graphics and photos from this machine are as good as it can get with a MFD in its price range. This said, the photos, even when dry, will smudge easily when handled with wet hands. The black text leaves a little to be desired in terms of crispness; however you should be fine using standard fonts such as Times New Roman and Arial at 10 points.
The Officejet J5780 printer measures 18 (L) x 15.2 (W) x 9.3 (H) in and weighs 14.6 pounds. It has an input paper capacity of 100 pages and a monthly duty cycle of up to 3000 pages. Print at 30 ppm for monochrome and 24 ppm for color. The maximum printing resolution for black is up to 1200 dpi. The device does not support automatic duplex printing and borderless printing. Lack of media card slots and PictBridge mean that you need to print via the PC.
The copier can reduce a document to 25% of its original size and enlarge it 400%. The maximum resolution for monochrome copies is up to 600 x 1200 dpi.
A 35-page automatic document feeder (ADF) feeds the A-4 size flatbed scanner. Scanned documents can be saved to the PC, edited, and emailed. The fax component supports fax forwarding and delayed fax sending but not remote retrieval. It has a memory capacity for 100 pages. You can use the device as a standalone fax machine that works independent of the PC.
Connectivity is via a USB 2.0 port. The absence of an ethernet jack and no Bluetooth imply that the Officejet J5780 cannot be a part of a networked environment. The HP 74 Black and HP 75 Tricolor ink cartridges supplied with the printer yield 200 and 170 pages, respectively. You can consider using the larger inkjet cartridges that cost more than the standard-sized cartridges but they last considerably longer.
The Officejet J5780 is not an ink guzzler but relatively slow in terms of printing, scanning, and faxing speeds when compared to other MFDs in its price range.
