HP J5508 Printer Review

Although it leans more heavily toward office use than home use, the HP OfficeJet J5508 could be a decent fit for both. With Draft mode speeds of up to 35 pages per minute, it is one of the fastest in its class, and the optional 6 colors of HP J5508 printer ink can greatly enhance the look of photos. Its high price tag could take it out of the running for small budgets, however.

The J5508 covers the four major functions: printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. It makes good use of the 25-sheet automatic document feeder for fast and continuous scanning, and OCR software is included to help turn paper documents into digital archives. It can make up to 99 copies from one original, and it includes digital zoom from 25-400%.

The unit has an impressive optical scanning resolution of up to 1200x2400 dpi, and a 48-bit color palette that can make sharp, detailed digital scans of full-color images. Up to 100 speed-dial numbers can be saved for faxing, and the unit can hold up to 100 pages in its memory, to protect against lost faxes when it runs out of paper or OfficeJet J5508 printer ink.

The system can operate with only a tricolor HP J5508 ink cartridge, but the composite black will use a lot of ink. A second black OfficeJet J5508 ink cartridge is recommended, especially for heavy printing volumes. Although prices for HP J5508 ink can be a bit high, especially for OEM versions, remanufactured versions can be found for less.

This business-centric all-in-one inkjet is impressive, with fast speeds and sharp output quality. A high price tag and pricey supplied may make the OfficeJet J5508 less appealing for those with a limited budget, however, and some competing models do offer more extras.
