The HP Deskjet F394 all-in-one inkjet printer is clearly aimed at the budget-minded buyer with limited needs, and its low price is impressive. It can print, scan, and copy, but it its slow speeds, expensive HP F394 printer ink, and mediocre output quality might be too much of a compromise to be worth the savings.
The F394 does an excellent job of fitting into tight spaces, with dimensions of only 6.7x16.8x10.2 inches. It is also easy to move around, weighing just a little over 10 pounds with the Deskjet F394 printer ink installed. A sparse control panel lacks the full-color display that makes other models easy to use, but users with limited expectations may not mind this compromise.
Copying is fairly limited, only allowing users to make 9 copies from a single original, and very few adjustments available. A flatbed scanner is the only means of scanning, as there is no automatic document feeder, and the platen can handle up to 8.5x11-inch paper. Scanning can reach up to 1200x2400 dpi optical resolutions, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software is included for converting scanned documents to editable text, which is a nice bonus feature for such a basic model.
The standard 4-color configuration uses two HP F394 ink cartridges: one tricolor and one black. An optional photo Deskjet F394 ink cartridge can replace the black supply for better images, but this adds to the cost. As it stands, OEM HP F394 ink is already a little costly, though remanufactured supplies are available for less.
For a simple and very affordable all-in-one inkjet, the HP F394 is very capable. Users with very basic needs will probably be happy with its cost and functionality. Those who find it a bit limited would do well to spend a bit more for a faster model with better output quality.
