HP 5531 e-All-in-One Printer Review

With fairly quick print speeds for the price, the HP ENVY 5531 e-All-in-One inkjet printer is one of the better bargains in its class. A maximum of 21 pages per minute in black and 17 pages per minute in color should be enough for the average home user, print quality is sharp, and HP 5531 printer ink supplies won't break the bank.

The 5531 is geared toward wireless functionality, with built-in wireless networking as well as support for Apple's AirPrint and HP's own ePrint platform. The latter lets users print by sending documents to a unique email address, and includes additional functionality that can be accessed via the control panel. The unit's input paper tray can hold a maximum of 100 sheets, while the output tray is limited to 30 sheets.

The touchscreen control panel on the machine may be somewhat small, but it is more than buyers generally get at such an affordable price. The unit itself remains very compact, even with its printing, scanning, and copying functions. It weighs only 12.27 pounds with the ENVY 5531 printer ink supplies installed, and it measures 4.8x17.4x13.3 inches. This makes it practically portable, and at least makes it very easy to store the device when not in use.

The standard black HP 5531 ink cartridge is rated for around 190 pages of output, but an "XL" version can provide around 480 pages. The tricolor ENVY 5531 ink cartridge is rated for around 165 pages, but its "XL" version is rated for 330 pages. These larger versions are more cost-effective, as are the remanufactured HP 5531 ink supplies available from third-party sellers.

Buyers who want fast speeds and advanced features like a document feeder may be a bit disappointed in the 5531. But for an affordable, easy-to-use inkjet all-in-one printer, it is tough to beat.
