HP T7200 Printer Review

Users who need a production inkjet printer should give the HP Designjet T7200 a serious look. It can handle media up to 42 inches wide, and provides bold color or affordable black-and-white output. Able to deliver up to four D/A1-size pages per minute, it is quite fast, but the cost of Designjet T7200 printer ink is fairly high.

As are many wide-format inkjet models, the T7200 is quite a large machine. It measures 54.1x77.7x27.6 inches, and it weighs a whopping 412 pounds with the HP T7200 printer ink installed. This certainly limits its appeal to production environments that know how to handle such a piece of machinery. It can connect via Gigabit ethernet, and wireless support is available as an optional upgrade.

The unit can print at a sharp optimized resolution of 2400x1200 dpi, which creates excellent color images or accurate line drawings. It can handle two roll feeds at once, with automatic roll switching, and it can be upgraded to handle three at once. Rolls can be up to 650 feet each, and the unit has an automatic cutter. A 320 GB hard drive is included, which stores large projects for quicker access, and with the HP Designjet SmartStream integration, users can send projects from multiple sources, such as smartphones and tablets.

The printing system uses six colors of HP T7200 ink cartridges, so replacing them can get a little expensive. In addition to the standard cyan, magenta, and yellow Designjet T7200 ink cartridges, it also uses matte black, gray, and dark gray supplies for better grayscale images.

For high-volume production printing, the combination of excellent color and sharp monochrome output from the T7200 makes it an excellent choice. The ability to expand to three media rolls is a great upgrade feature, but users should be aware of its bulky frame and expensive HP T7200 ink costs.
