HP D1400 Printer Review

It doesn't get much simpler than the HP Deskjet D1400 inkjet printer, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It is a budget-friendly model with a very low price that should suit home users with occasional printing needs, and it can print up to 16 pages per minute black and 12 pages per minute in color when set to Fast Draft mode. HP D1400 printer ink is a bit expensive, however.

One of the most impressive elements of the D1400 is its compact design, occupying very little space, especially when folded up and not in use. It measures only 5.5x16.6x12.45 inches even with the tray extended, and it weighs just 4.5 pounds with the Deskjet D1400 ink cartridges installed. There is no control panel to speak of, so users will need to utilize the included software for more advanced features.

Those who assume that output options are limited due to its small size would be wrong. The unit supports a resolution of up to 1200x1200 dpi, with an optimized resolution of 4800x1200 dpi for photos. The input tray can hold a maximum of 80 sheets, and media types such as envelopes, photo paper, greeting cards, and transparencies are supported, among others. It can even handle borderless printing on many common sizes, the most useful of which is 4x6 inches.

Unlike some models, the unit can continue printing if one of the HP D1400 ink cartridges runs empty, allowing users to finish their print job before needing to find replacement printer ink. Unfortunately, Deskjet D1400 ink tends to be fairly expensive, and small capacities give it a high cost per page. Remanufactured HP D1400 ink is available at a lower price, but it is still not as cost-effective as some competing models.

You won't find a lot of advanced features in the HP D1400, but it is a very capable inkjet printer for home users with simple needs. It can handle a variety of media types and sizes, and offers decent printing speeds, but high operating costs make it expensive to own.
