The HP LaserJet CP1217 is a little disappointing on the speed front, at only 12 ppm in black and 8 ppm in color, but this laser printer has a very low cost per page, thanks to affordable prices on printer toner. First page out times are slow, and paper capacity is fairly limited, so it will be best in a smaller office.

The CP1217 might be a tight fit in a home environment, but small offices should have no problem with its dimensions. It measures 10x15.7x17.8 inches, but its weight of 38.9 pounds might mean enlisting some help when setting it up or moving it around. The input paper tray maxes out at 150 sheets, and although it can handle other media like envelopes, labels, and more, the lack of a multipurpose tray means users will have to clear the tray and reload for alternate media.

The maximum printing resolution is 600 dpi when using either black or color HP CP1217 toner, though the ImageREt technology is designed to enhance images and approximate the results of a 2400 dpi engine. Though the maximum output speeds are adequate, the first page out times are abysmal, at 24 seconds for monochrome and 30 seconds for color, so users should expect a lot of waiting on a new task.

The real benefit of the CP1217 is its inexpensive replacement toners, however. With four LaserJet CP1217 toner cartridges to replace, it could easily get expensive. Fortunately, remanufactured HP CP1217 toner cartridges are available to keep the cost down. This low cost per page for LaserJet CP1217 toner helps make it one of the most affordable color laser solutions on the market.

Buyers interested in the CP1217 should know what they are getting. It doesn't have particularly fast output speeds, and its wait times could be frustrating. Its compact frame and low-cost HP CP1217 toner are its best assets, however, and might make it worthwhile for tight budgets.
