Portable inkjet printers are becoming increasingly popular as buyer's see the benefit of producing photos from just about anywhere. The HP Photosmart A525 is one of the most affordable models in its class, and offers a decent balance of quality and affordability. The single HP A525 ink cartridge is also fairly inexpensive, but it doesn't last long.

The A525 is lightweight and quite portable, measuring 5.4x8.9x4.6 inches and weighing only 2.7 pounds, though this doesn't include the weight of the Photosmart A525 printer ink supply, which is negligible. It includes an AC adapter cable, but does not include a battery like some competing models, so its portability will be limited to areas with a power socket available.

Most printing can be done by inserting a memory card into one of its many slots, or connecting a PictBridge-enabled digital camera for transfer and printing of photos. The 2.4-inch screen is a bit small, but offers a decent preview of images before printing. The unit itself offers virtually no options for editing, red-eye reduction, or some of the features available in more expensive models, however, so users will still need to connect to a PC when these features are needed.

Using only one tricolor Photosmart A525 ink cartridge is a tradeoff for its small size, but this adds to the operating expenses. The price for HP A525 ink replacements is reasonable, but each supply only provides up to 55 pages, so users will be purchasing HP A525 printer ink more often than they would like.

While the HP A525 isn't the fastest portable inkjet photo printer, it offers a good compromise for such a low price. Its output quality isn't as good as slightly more expensive models, however, and operating costs can be high.
