The design of the 9000 is understandably large, but more compact than one might expect, given its support for such large media. The unit measures 47.3 inches by 100 inches by 33.9 inches and weighs a hefty 506 pounds. It comes with a stand and rollers for easily moving it around. The can handle media up to 64 inches in width, and supports a wide variety of media types, including self-adhesive vinyl, paper, films, fabrics, and banner scrims. This versatility opens up a wide variety of potential applications for users.

The fact that the device is an inkjet doesn't mean users will pay a lot for printer ink. HP 9000 ink cartridges are very affordably-priced. A combination of six DesignJet 9000 ink cartridges are needed, however, which does mean a lot of changing when it is time for new DesignJet 9000 ink.
