The HP Deskjet 827 inkjet printer is fairly basic, and falls behind the competition in a few aspects, such as slow speeds of 6.5 pages per minute for black and 4 pages per minute for color. Nevertheless, for simple, affordable printing, it could be a decent choice. OEM Deskjet 827 printer ink supplies a pricey, but alternatives are available.

The 827 inherits the blocky design of its forbears, with a height of 8.9 inches and a wide footprint of 15.6x17.5 inches. Its 14.3-pound weight is manageable, however, and includes the HP 827 printer ink supplies as well. The input tray holds up to 150 sheets, but both the input and output trays stick out of the front, requiring a curved paper path that might lead to more frequent jams.

One of the biggest drawbacks to the unit's design is that it includes only a parallel port for connecting to a computer. Since many modern PCs don't include this connection, an adapter will likely be needed, which adds to the cost. Multiple media types are supported, such as labels, transparencies, coated paper, and glossy paper. Since the printer maxes out at 600 dpi, users shouldn't expect the sharpest quality, but for everyday prints, it is adequate.

One potential downside is the high cost of Deskjet 827 ink cartridges. This can be avoided somewhat by choosing remanufactured HP 827 ink at less than half the cost of OEM supplies. The yield of the black HP 827 ink cartridge is up to 500 pages, and the tricolor supply can last for up to 410 pages.

The Deskjet 827 might be useful as a second inkjet printer for basic documents, but it is hard to recommend it for any heavy use. With its limited connection options and slow speeds, buyers will find much better options on the market.
