HP 812C Printer Review

The HP Deskjet 812C is an aged inkjet printer that once was ahead of its time, and now is a bit outdated. Printing at only 6.5 pages per minute using black HP 812C ink and 4.5 pages in color printer ink, this unit just can't compete with more contemporary printers. It takes nearly 2 minutes, sometimes more, to print a single 4x6 color photo. The quality is not bad, but it will require some patience to get there. Originally designed for small offices, these days the HP 812C would be more relevant in a low budget home.

The fast drying Deskjet 812C ink and matching printheads can produce a resolution of 600x600 dpi. The black HP 812C ink cartridge has a maximum page yield of 500, while the color printer ink tank can yield up to 620 pages. For low-volume printing, these tanks will work just fine, but for more demanding printing needs, the Deskjet 812C ink cartridges will end up costing more to replace than this device is worth.

The 812C has a max memory of 2 MB and has been praised for the lack of noise it makes. After being discontinued by HP, this machine can be found online for anywhere from $40 used to $200 refurbished. It is compatible with Mac and Windows and has a 100 sheet media capacity. Images can be transferred through either a standard parallel port or a more speedy USB port.

One of the best features of the Deskjet 812C is the exclusive PhotoREt II color layering technology, which guarantees colors will be completely true to the original. It has an easy set up, only requiring users to install printheads and tanks of HP 812C ink, then plug in and start printing. Even though it is old, this is a quality inkjet printer that should not be overlooked.
