Consumers looking for a basic stand-alone color inkjet printer should consider the HP Deskjet 697C. Even though it lacks the features that many modern printers have, such as connection options and multiple functions, for simple people just wanting something to print photos and school projects with, this unit is perfect. It does have frustratingly low speeds, but with a little patience, the results will be worth it. It is easy to use and compact enough to fit anywhere.

Only 3 pages per minute can be produced when using exclusively black HP 697C ink. Less than 2 pages per minute can be produced with the color printer ink. There are only 2 Deskjet 697C ink cartridges that come standard in the box; however, there is an optional photo tank as well. When printing photos, the photo HP 697C ink cartridge replaces the black tank and yields a resolution of 600x300 dpi. The black printer ink maxes out at 600x600 dpi, while color can only reach 300x300 dpi.

The HP 697C ink is applied to various kinds of paper, such as banner, letter, envelope and index card, using nozzles. This method is known as drop-on-demand thermal inkjet technology and is commonly found in similar kinds of printers. Images are transferred by a parallel interface only, and there is a 100-sheet capacity. These features are standard but together make the 697C a solid product.

The tanks of Deskjet 697C ink have decent page yields, and if the printer is used at standard-capacity, they will not have to be replaced often. However, if small businesses try to utilize this machine in a higher-capacity, it will not be as efficient as hoped for.
