HP 691C Printer Review

With an extremely light weight and compact size, the HP Deskjet 691c inkjet printer would be perfect for home users if it weren't for its limited speeds. At only 5 pages per minute for color and 1.7 pages per minute for black, it is much slower than competing models in its class. The high cost of HP 691c printer ink won't help sway many buyers either, but third-party alternatives can provide some relief.

The design of the 691c is impressively compact, with a very small footprint of 15.9x17.2 inches and a height of only 7.8 inches. The unit weighs 11.7 pounds, not including the Deskjet 691c printer ink supplies, so it is light enough to move easily when needed. The main drawback of its design is the inclusion of only a parallel port for connecting to a computer. Most users will probably need a USB adapter as a result.

The input paper capacity of 100 sheets is quite good, especially considering the compact frame of the unit. Both input and output paper trays are oriented toward the front, though, so the curved paper path could lead to more frequent jams or bent media. Supported media types include labels, glossy paper, envelopes, and transparencies, in addition to plain paper.

The other major drawback is the high price of replacement HP 691c ink cartridges. With yields of 350 pages for the tricolor Deskjet 691c ink cartridge and 500 pages for the black supply, they could be cost-effective at lower prices. Luckily, remanufactured HP 691c ink is available at much lower prices, saving users a lot of money over time.

With a decent paper capacity and high-quality photo output, the Deskjet 691c could be a very impressive inkjet printer. Unfortunately, limited connectivity options, slow speeds, and costly supplies make it a poor choice in comparison to competing models.
