HP 500C Printer Review

Need an inkjet printer for occasional printing only? Whether printing color or monochromatic, the HP Deskjet 500c could be a decent choice. If printing large amounts of documents or wishing to print photos, one couldn't pick a worse printer, though. With slow speeds, weak resolutions and a low monthly duty cycle, users won't be too thrilled with this less-than-standard printer, and it definitely doesn't hold up to newer, more advanced models. The price tag on printer ink won't exactly leave buyers smiling, either.

Because it only uses two HP 500c ink cartridges—one black and one tricolor—it seems easy enough to maintain. The problem, though, is that the printer ink runs out fairly fast. Since the magenta, yellow and cyan are all together in one Deskjet 500c ink tank, if one runs out, they all must be replaced. That forces the user to spend more money on ink than necessary. With page yields of only 640 pages for tricolor and 790 pages for black HP 500c ink, if used often, they will need to be changed pretty often. Remanufactured versions of the Deskjet 500c ink cartridges are available for a fraction of the cost, however, from third party manufacturers making this unit a lot more affordable.

The resolutions are relatively low also. When printing with black or color HP 500c ink, the highest possible resolution is only 300x300 dpi. Print speeds are definitely lagging as well—black documents can only be printed at a rate of 3 pages per minute, and color takes 3 minutes per page. If printing more than a few sheets, this could become an annoyance quickly.

Only Windows operating systems are compatible with the 500c, and a parallel port is the only way of connecting. This inkjet unit is about as simple as printing gets—but for those with simple tasks, the 500c is all that's needed.
