HP 500 Printer Review

A little outdated and now hard to find, the HP Deskjet 500 offers basic printing for homes with minimal printing needs. Though it doesn't live up to newer models when it comes to speeds, resolution or features, it does live up when it comes to reliability. Its monthly duty cycle of 1000 pages will keep home users happy, fitting their monochromatic personal printing needs.

Want to print photos from home? This probably would be a poor choice in printers. Printing using only black HP 500 ink cartridges, black and white photos will be your only option. Though glossy paper is compatible with this inkjet unit, the low resolution using black HP 500 ink of 300x300 dpi will leave the photos looking grainy. Those who prefer a simple, black printer may find this to suit their needs just fine; however, if color printing is desired the HP 500c is always available, which uses color printer ink as well.

This unit is much better suited for monochrome text printing. The black Deskjet 500 ink cartridge is the only tank users will need to print documents, and it can yield around 790 pages. Though the black HP 500 ink is easy to find, it is somewhat pricey, especially for the quality it exerts. The best bet is to find a printer that is more affordable with inexpensive ink tanks or to buy printer ink from a third party vendor for only a fraction of the price.

The 500 can only be connected by parallel port—which may be limiting to those who prefer USB or wireless connection. Its weight of 14.3 pounds won't weigh buyers down, though, and its dimensions of 17.2x7.8x14.8 inches won't take up too much space either. The main problems with this inkjet unit are its lack of common features, like scanning or an automatic document feeder and its low resolutions using Deskjet 500 ink.
