HP 4650 Printer Review

The HP Color LaserJet 4650 is a color laser printer designed for high-volume small and medium office environments, or small and medium workgroups. Its excellent print quality, decent speed, and impressive extra features make it a great choice, but its price may be a bit prohibitive for many. If the price is too high, the LaserJet 1600 toner printer should be evaluated.

Before delving into specifications it is worth noting a few interesting features of the HP 4650 that are not often seen in other printers. First, the 4650 provides an option for a hard drive. This allows the printer to hold print jobs in memory for quickly printing without the need for a PC. This is particularly good for letterhead and other repetitive printing tasks, and saves users from having to locate a document every time it needs to be printed. Second, the printer features environmental sensors that allow it to adjust to temperature and humidity for better printing quality.

Print speed is good, but not fantastic. At 22 pages per minute, it will get the job done. Print quality is excellent, with great text quality and decent graphics quality. Photo printing is above average for a laser printer. Most laser printers have trouble with photo printing, and the 4650 is an exception to this rule. While photo quality is not on par with a dedicated photo printer, it is unquestionably better than the average laser.

The LaserJet 4650 is certainly built for high-volume use. While its initial paper capacity is 600 sheets, it can be expanded to 1,600 sheets by adding additional input trays as printing needs grow. Its 85,000 page monthly duty cycle means it is ready to handle all the printing an office can throw at it.

Like the HP LaserJet 4650's paper capacity, the HP LaserJet 4650 toner cartridges were made for printing large amounts. Each color HP 4650 toner cartridge comes with an 8,000 page yield, and each black HP 4650 toner cartridge has a capacity of 9,000 pages. The HP LaserJet 4650 toner cartridges will not disappoint any high-volume small or medium office environment.

One sticking point for many will be the price. At the time of its introduction it was priced fairly, but newer models offer more speed and sometimes more capacity for the price and additional functionality like the HP CM2320 toner printer.

Overall, the HP Color LaserJet 4650 is an impressive color laser printer that should be a good fit for high-volume users. The extra features and ability to grow with changing needs may justify the higher price for some.
